Most cases of scoliosis have an unknown cause, this condition is clinically called idiopathic scoliosis. As causes of such conditions are unidentified, many myths regarding scoliosis have spread everywhere.

Sadly, believing in most of those myths wouldn't help a scoliosis patient to heal. The problem is that following the myths might even make the condition worse.

So here we opted to list the common myths surrounding scoliosis and provide you with the facts about each false belief.

Scoliosis is caused by carrying heavy backpacks

This myth probably resulted from the fact that most people who are diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis are adolescents. School children carrying heavy backpacks become the source of such belief. The truth is, carrying heavy backpacks isn't related to developing scoliosis at all. Just imagine how some children developed scoliosis while others don't when each of them carries the same number of books in their backpacks.

Scoliosis can be corrected using braces

Though it is sometimes referred to as correction braces, a scoliosis brace will not correct the spine curvature. Scoliosis specialists in Singapore prescribed wearing braces merely to help in preventing the further curving of the backbone as the patient grows up.

Scoliosis prevents pregnancy

Scoliosis and infertility have nothing to do with one another. It is true, however, that women are more susceptible to developing scoliosis. Aside from that, scoliosis would not limit pregnancy nor will it causes miscarriage.

Scoliosis can damage internal organs

The idea of a curving spine might have triggered this myth. But then, scoliosis will not damage any of your internal organs. As your spine curves to either a C or an S, so will your organs. Our bodies are flexible like that.

Scoliosis patients are weak and fragile

Although scoliosis can limit certain activities, it will not weaken an individual. Some patients diagnosed with scoliosis are active in sports, pageantry, and other activities that require physical stability.

Scoliosis surgery and recovery are painful

This isn't entirely a myth. Scoliosis surgery, just like any other surgery, is painful to some extent. However, it isn't so painful that you'll be bedridden for a couple of days. In fact, physical therapy goes with surgery.
