One of the hardest things with having diabetes is that you’re prone to diabetic neuropathy.

If you’re not familiar with diabetic neuropathy, it’s when you have high blood sugar in your body that your nerves get damaged. And when your nerves get damaged, it often starts in your feet and legs.

Once you’re experiencing diabetic neuropathy, you’re prone to diabetic foot gangrene and ulcers which can lead to foot amputation. I was almost amputated because I had a diabetic foot ulcer, but thanks to the Singapore Diabetic Foot Centre, I was able to have diabetic wound healing treatment before it got worst.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a year ago, just 2 months after I migrated here to Singapore. I was able to monitor my health after being diagnosed, but while I was going for my morning walk along Singapore’s Marina Bay, I felt an uncomfortable sting on the sole of my feet. I decided to ignore it, but the pain got so bad after a while that I had to stop and look at what it was.

When I removed my shoes, I saw that the sole of my feet was bleeding because it was scraping the rough insole of my shoes.  I was really frightened because the wound looked deep and I was aware that it could lead to a diabetic foot wound. I did what I can to keep it as clean as possible so it would heal. But it didn’t close up like a normal wound.

That’s when I decided to go to Singapore Diabetic Foot Centre (SDFC) to have it checked. True enough, I was right: the wound turned out to be a diabetic foot wound and I needed a diabetic wound healing treatment and diabetic foot care so that it wouldn’t get worst.

SDFC is a diabetic foot centre that caters to the early diagnosis and management of complications caused by diabetes on the foot and lower extremities. They help prevent critical complications that could lead to amputation of the legs.

As a diabetic foot centre, SDFC offer services that help diagnose and manage diabetic foot wounds and gangrene. Some of these services include Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Assessment and musculoskeletal Foot Assessment. They also offer diabetic insoles to help prevent wounds like mine from appearing.

Since I already had a diabetic foot ulcer, the remedy specialists from SDFC did was called casting and offloading. They said this was crucial in the healing process since it would reduce weight on the wounded area.

First, they had to cast the wounded area so that it has little contact with my footwear and avoid complicating the wound. Once they have casted the wounded area, it was time to offload the area; by doing this, the weight of my whole body is redistributed throughout the other area of my feet so that there is less pressure on the wounded area and increase the chances of the wound to heal properly.

After a month, the diabetic foot wound on my feet made a full recovery. The diabetic wound healing treatment and the diabetic foot care that this clinic gave me was very effective and I’m very thankful for what they have done for me.
