Spider veins look closely to varicose veins but are smaller and do not usually appearing bulging from the skin. Spider veins are also a result of irregular blood flow which damages the valves inside our veins. They can be found most commonly behind the knees up to the thigh. In some cases, there can also be spider veins near the armpit and ankles.

Spider veins do not often need medical treatment. The condition rarely causes pain or discomfort. However, since spider veins are unsightly, some patients resort to having them corrected through surgery or sclerotherapy.

How do spider veins look?

The condition got its name from how it resembles a spider web. Spider veins are small visible veins that often appear in red or blue color.

What causes spider veins?

Going back to our biology lessons in school, blood circulates in our bodies through our veins. These veins contain one-way valves inside which prevent the backflow of blood. When these valves are damaged, irregular flow of blood ensues. This event causes spider veins to form around your body.

Some other causes of damage to the valves are as follows:

  • Inherent weak veins
  • Hormonal changes especially in women
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Age
  • Standing or walking for long periods

How can you prevent spider veins from erupting?

As treatment isn’t always necessary, some activities are suggested by vein doctors to lessen the chance of having spider veins. These includes:

  • Doing regular exercise to promote good blood circulation
  • Maintaining a healthy and appropriate weight.
  • Avoid standing for too long
  • Avoid sitting with cross legs
  • Elevate your legs when resting.

These tips will help lessen the appearance of spider veins. Should you want to get rid of them for good, ask your doctor for clinical therapy.
