Causes and Symptoms

Does your big toe seem to be pointing towards the smallest toe? Or your foot seemed to have a bony bump near the big toe or the smallest toe? This can be frustrating to look at as it gives your foot an unattractive appearance. It can also be difficult to find good footwear when the bump becomes very prominent.

This condition is called bunion for the big toes, and bunionette for the smallest toes. The deformity happens when the bones from either end of the toes are pushed outward causing a bumpy appearance.

Many factors can be attributed to developing bunions on feet. Some of which are as follows:

  • The certain shape of the foot
  • Bone deformity
  • Arthritis
  • Wearing tight, narrow footwear
  • Foot injury

Bunion rarely hurts. Although, severe deformity of the bones can cause painful sensations around the affected toe or the whole foot. As walking can be painful in severe cases bunion can restrict movement. It also causes calluses to form around the affected toes.

When to Visit an Orthopedic Clinic

In most cases, bunions can go untreated. As mentioned earlier, it can be inherent and wouldn’t normally hurt. However, you will need to see a foot and ankle specialist when you start to encounter one or more of the following difficulties:

  • Swelling or painful sensation near the toe or of the whole foot
  • Limited movement of the affected toes
  • Walking difficulties
  • Problem on finding a shoe that fits with bunion

Treating severe cases of bunions and bunionette usually involves surgery. Bunion surgery is widely available in Singapore nowadays. Your foot specialist will perform such surgery to realign the bones on the affected toe to treat bunions.

If you aren’t suffering from the difficulties listed above but want to have your bunion fixed, you have to consult your doctor first for the proper procedure and possible alternative therapy.
